ice resin mixed media canvases

mixed media art with ice resin

ice resin on canvasIs there anything better than experimenting with new supplies?  I suppose, but I don’t have time or money for a trip to Bora Bora right now, so I’ll stick with my new bottles of Ice Resin.

It’s mostly used for jewelry, and I have been brainstorming some mixed media jewelry ideas, but I thought, “why not try it on some canvas art?”  So that’s what I did.

  • These are all 4*4 canvases that I painted with ink and acrylics.
  • I used Ranger texture paste on each of them to build up some dimensional texture, and added a bit more color to blend it with the background.
  • On two of them, I added quilled paper pieces in matching colors, and let everything dry.
  • Now, it’s time for the Resin!  Ice Resin comes with two parts- the resin, and the hardener.  They must be combined in equal parts in disposable containers.
  • A big mistake I made was not being careful with the amounts I was making.  I made way too much the first time, and ended up pouring too much on my first canvas.  It leaked over the sides, and dried on my table.  There is now a big hole where I had to tear off the canvas that had adhered to the table surface.  So, be careful!  I think a good rule for me is to mix less than I think I’ll need.  You can always mix more, and a little goes further than you think it will.  I didn’t underestimate this stuff my second time around- much better result.
  • This takes a few days to dry, but what a cool effect!!  What do you think?

There are so many possibilities for this technique, especially with all the texture that I build up on my canvases.  The texture paste and quilling pieces look so cool pushing through the surface of the resin!  I need to brainstorm some ways to create larger pieces with this technique.
