Mixed Media is the use of various artistic elements to create a single piece of art. As a long-time scrapbooker, I’ve technically been creating mixed media art forms for a long time- paper, fabric, paint, etc. However, scrapbooking, I would say, is more of it’s own category- that of catalouging memories for future remembrance. Mixed Media is far more abstract, in my opinion- less specific, and more open to interpretation and technique. I’ve been wanting to break into mixed media art for a looooong time, and last night, I finally finished my first abstract quilling piece.
I’ve had an image of this finished piece in my head for about the last month, and I hope you’ll pardon me for saying this, but I totally nailed it. :)
I used quilling paper and techniques to create the rolls, and I cemented them on top a large mound of texture paint in two colors. You can see I added some wire to give it a more chaotic feel, and finally I splattered black paint on top to make it even more messy and crazy.
So, what does this piece make you think of? What I had in mind was disease- whether it be of the body or mind. I can see, in my cluster of tightly bound rolls, ill-favored ideas, thoughts, bacteria or viruses that have taken root, and are slowly but surely spreading and tightening the looser coils around them. The growths of wire cannot mean anything good, and by the splatters of black splashed all over, nothing seems to be healing any time soon.
Perhaps I’m feeling a bit morbid at the moment. Perhaps you have your own interpretation. Needless to say, though, this piece is the first of many more to come!
It has an organic quality
Awesome Kasey! I will for sure check that out.
This is really ugly in a really beautiful way- I love it! So when’s the gallery opening? ;-)
By the way, I did some fun collage pieces today inspired by the art journal stuff we’ve been pinning- mod podged stuff from magazines, added some paint, cut outs, fabric, etc. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to take some photos in daylight and put them up on my blog. :-)
Stephanie- you’re probably right. Maybe I should have made it more brown… :) Thanks for visiting!
Very cool! I love the colors and composition. Though it’s too pretty for me to think “disease” ;-)
