Every piece I have created so far has been very different from the pieces that came before it. Different colors, composition, size, etc. This is the first piece I’ve done where I really felt I should do a full line of different sizes in the same colors and using the same materials.
I rarely have a full concept of my piece before I start working. Usually I finish a background, and then let the canvas tell me where to go from there. With this tiny piece, I decided I wanted a full background in black. Once that was finished, the idea of using gold seemed obvious.
I used gold texture paste to adhere my paper pieces to the canvas. Once the paste was dry, I splattered it with a darker gold and then black, to add to the mess, since mess is usually what you get when you focus solely on money, like Midas, right? Splatters seemed appropriate.
Once I saw this piece come together, the idea for doing a full line of nothing but black and gold hit me. Though it seems like they’d all look the same, I am getting better at understanding how small variations can separate pieces as well as big ones. So stay tuned, and we’ll see how this line all comes together.
