This is the biggest piece in my Midas collection I’ve finished so far. At 24*36, it’s the biggest canvas I’ve finished, as well (though I am working on some larger ones as we speak- they just take a lot more time to finish!).
I started with a black background, spraying the canvas with water as I worked with black acrylic to achieve the drips and uneven covering. It seemed appropriate that to represent a man to whom money meant everything, the base for my painting should be an unstable black color. I put some gold paint mixed with a lot of water into a spray bottle and added a sheen of gold over the black. You can see it much better in the picture below.
My collage elements are a mix of cardstock, rice paper, texture paste, and metallic paint for the words. I found some gold leafing tucked away in my scrapbooking supplies, and I knew it would be perfect for this piece, so I added some in certain places to bring a little more balance. I absolutely love how it reflects the light.
Though I made this piece with the idea of how the love of money corrupts things, I think it turned out rather pretty…
