I quickly wanted to show you guys the other encaustic pieces I made for Christmas this year. The one above took me 3-4 times to get it right- I used small alphabet stamps to imprint into the wax. If you’re going to do this, it’s suggested that you used a little vegetable oil on the stamp. It acts as a releasing agent so you don’t end up pulling away any wax. I filled the stamped images with some gold wax, which essentially was clear wax- I simply added some gold pigment. Once the wax had cooled, I VERY CAREFULLY scraped the excess wax off to reveal the golden words. This is where I had to do things multiple times, because inevitably I would push too hard and dig out a big chunk of wax. Once you learn to have patience and go slowly enough, you should be ok.
The next two were more of my work with my newest techniques, image transfer and india ink. I’m still pretty amazed that working with india ink on wax works as well as it does. Of course you have to be careful (my ‘excelsis’ below is not quite as neat as I would like it to be) but it’s so fun to work with and I love the dimension that you can achieve by layering through the wax.
If any of you have any encaustic techniques you’d like to share, I am all ears. I’m really enjoying working in this medium, and I know that through practice and experimentation my work can be a lot better.
As always, thanks for stopping by!
