You may remember a post I made back in mid July, showing a large canvas piece I was working on called “The Fissure”. Well, I finally finished it!
When we last saw this piece, I had sewed strips of wire window screen to the canvas, surrounding the crack in the middle. Once I adhered most of my paper pieces, I used my sculptamold paper clay to cover the wire and create these walls surrounding the red and black. I made them curving inward, as if trying to keep the flame and darkness concealed, but the pressure was too much and the blackness is breaking free.
Once I added all the paper clay, I extended the black to cover everything inside the boundaries of the clay, painting with greens and browns outside, and blacks and reds inside. To give the idea of this fissure bursting from underneath the earth and sea, I used turquoise and blue to create an ocean, as if the fissure was even bigger and fuller underneath the water, but just covered. The little islands I created further that idea and look.
I tried to use colors that would further the symbolic nature of this piece. I used the colors of earth- brown and green for land and blue and turquoise for water, to represent life and prosperity, and innocence and beauty. At the core, though, is this darkness and heat, which as I made this piece, seemed to me to represent corruption, sin and pride, but I think could also represent passion. I’ll leave more interpretations to you guys, and see what you come up with. :)
