My First First Friday

In my town of Raleigh, the first Friday of every month is called, appropriately “First Friday” and is set aside by the city as a night when all the art galleries around town remain open until 10 pm.  Everyone in the city knows about First Friday- it seems to be ingrained into the minds of every Raleighite.  Of course, the art galleries aren’t the only ones joining the party.  The close down many of the streets downtown to make room for acrobats, rock bands, food trucks and other vendors so it really does become a big party with lots to do and see.  Of course, the art aspect is still the main focus.   I’ve been shouting about it from the rooftops for months, it seems, but this past Friday I had my art showcased in one of Raleigh’s many art galleries for the first time.  The crowds were large and ever flowing, but despite that I had people coming back for a second look at certain pieces, who wanted to know more about the process of creating them and what they meant to me.  It was great to see people’s reactions to things I have done- Of course, some people whispered their impressions to the friends they had with them, and it was hard for me to not assume they were not saying more negative things.  After all, why would they be whispering?  But it was an amazing experience, and one that I shall repeat at least a few times in the near future.

I am happy to announce that I’ve found a permanent gallery for my art.  I will be showcasing at Pitch Studios in downtown Raleigh for the next few months at the very least.  I’m so excited, especially because I thought that my first showing was only going to be for a month.  Now, knowing that I have a permanent space for as long as I want it, I’m excited and humbled.  Thank you for all the support, advice, and loyalty.  I would never have had the courage to do this if it hadn’t been for all the artists and friends I’ve met through this blog.  Thank you so much!!
